Backpack Check!
It's time for the kiddos to go back to school! Use this backpack check to make sure their bags aren't harming their spines!
1. The backpack should never weigh more than 5-10% of your child's body weight
2. When packing the backpack, put the pointy or bulky objects away from the area that rests on their spine
3. Make sure the backpack has a padded back to rest against your child
4. Use both straps, not just one! Using just one shifts all the weight to one side and can cause muscle spasms
5. Wide padded shoulder straps are important for comfort so they don't dig into their shoulders
6. Fit the backpack so the top is just below the bottom of their neck. The backpack should never hang more than 4 inches below their belt line
7. A backpack with individualized compartments will help position the contents most effectively
